Before Chicago…

I wasn’t sure of myself as an educator but now I have experienced how powerful teaching can be, I am inspired to share all that I have gained and inspire others with my work. Thank you Chicago and all who made this trip happen in one way or the other.

You changed lives by giving.

The Team Manifesto

In order to encourage a healthy and supportive creative environment we will:
  1. Ask questions that will prompt others to think.
  2. Change the way we view things and we will not be afraid of ourselves.
  3. Be completely honest and offer space, interdependence and competition (an eagerness to be the best we can be).
  4.  Critique to exemplify areas that do not work and pick out areas that do work and explain why.
  5. Be committed to supporting each other through excellence, sensitivity and being genuine.
  6. Be encouraging and challenging “in order to grow you need to be uncomfortable.”
  7. Create an environment that we can be vulnerable in and it’s okay to fail.

I make a pilgrimage to the birthplace of the poetry slam: the legendary Green Mill, where I meet slam founder Marc Smith. He tells me there is space in slam for all kinds of styles, not just the bombastic. And proves it too. The slam is warm, humorous and all about the poetry. I’ll need to write more about this one… a shining night.  - Miriam
