A response to Shane’s exercise

(Sunday, 8th of November…)

This is the point where I enter the blog… Jacob has already introduced me somewhere below, but to reiterate, I’m Miriam Nash - Jacob’s assistant on this project and also a poet myself. But to the London SLAM team, I’m known as Aunty Miriam, which I think sums up my role this week quite nicely…

One of the best things about the week so far has been having a lovely balance between adults and teenagers. This means there’s sometimes a morsel of time to sit back and do some writing, or join in with an exercise. Here’s my response to Shane’s prompts, inspired by Millennium Park’s centre-piece: The Bean.

You’re willing to be anything we make you:

our coffee stains, history in brick and block

any skyline we decide to spin around you.

You’re distance, stretched. Teasing bodies

in your palms like dough, you mould

our shadows, bend every corner to a curve.

Chicago is a sun and you’re its moon.

We come for your metallic kiss

city between lips.
